Hearts break -it's not just a song

December 30, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe Leave a Comment

istock_000004839174xheart-break.jpgHypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Remember that name.  It can lead to a broken heart.

HEART BREAK from the loss of someone you love — a lover, a child, a friend — it aches more on holidays. Memories flood in and loneliness can take over. Heartbreak from loss can break the soul.

And then there are other kinds of broken hearts – – hearts that with a simple twist of fate, your genetics, can stop “working”.  In his moving and informative piece in Sports Illustrated, “Following the Trail of Broken Hearts”, David Epstein writes about the tragic loss of some sports figures ( famous and not so) from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.  (Learn more about this disease the hypertrophic cardiomyopathy association)

Epstein also writes about what this has meant to some players. One who wasn’t allowed to play college basketball after a diagnostic test showed a “bad heart” and he believes he lost his  shot at the NBA.  Another who was traded to another team when his heart behaved “badly” rather than go through the testing and damage to his career.

Do you know what it’s like to lose a career that you’ve invested your soul in?  That has the potential to earn you huge money?  That can give you glory?  Or maybe just something you did and liked doing.  All because your body doesn’t work the way it should.   It’s a loss, that’s what it is.  You just can’t let it break your soul,  can you?

Are you trying to figure out what you can do – now that you can’t do what you once could because of chronic illness?  I’ve made this easier for you with my booklets, Career Thrive when you live with chronic illness.  They offer the strategies, concrete ideas and motivating stories you need to kickstart your heart and your thoughts.

What do you do if you're told that working will make you sick?

December 12, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 3 Comments

I was blind in one eye and couldn’t lift myself to get out of bed. My neurologist told me that once I had my strength and my vision back, I should go back to work. That was 30 years ago and I’ve followed his advice ever since. But this is clearly not the message everyoneRead More

who pays attention to your health care?

December 7, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe Leave a Comment

Q: What’s wrong with this picture? A: Jews (or at least observant Jews) don’t eat Ham! But even well meaning people can make mistakes, don’t they? I thought of this when a client emailed me about an article about medical mistakes in The New Yorker (click here to read how checklists save lives) She wrote:Read More

Chronic illness demands you take action.

November 14, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 1 Comment

Today is Diabetes World day.  I don’t have Diabetes among my illnesses but I do know that chronic illness can leave you feeling powerless.  I wrote in my last post about how easy it is to feel you have no voice — and how bad it is for you.   So, if you have Diabetes,Read More

Does your doctor run late?

November 11, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 3 Comments

This past Friday I missed an appointment with a client because I spent two hours waiting to see a hand surgeon about an infection in my thumb. By the time I saw him, the tears were welling in my eyes.  Nope –I don’t cry when I’m angry.  This experience brought back the memories full forceRead More

Technology snafus, chronic illness snafus. Are you ready to pull out your hair?

November 7, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 2 Comments

My apologies for those who received the last few posts in gobbledeygook.  That wasn’t my intention (if you didn’t read the last post about intention, you should!) But as we know, even with the “right” intentions, things can still mess us up. Technology does it. And so does chronic illness. Have you found that whenRead More

Oprah: Need a career coach now that you have a chronic illness?

October 25, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 5 Comments

Amy T, at Diabetes Mine, diabetes (and other diseases) info gold mine made me aware ofOprah’s newest interest: the thyroid. Oprah… trend setter or trend spotter? In October issue of “O” , Oprah disclosed her “thyroid condition”. When Oprah learned of this diagnosis (oh, so that’s why I’ve been tired and gained so much weight!),Read More

Chronic pain: we don't have to fix it.

October 22, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 3 Comments

I saw my “Healthy Body Coach” today. O.K – she’s not a coach, she’s a physical therapist. But, she’s coach-like in her approach. I went because I’d been having pain, first in my arm, then hip, legs and my neck. I’d been pain free for a few months so I thought I must have done somethingRead More

Can people with chronic illness be productive workers? YES!

October 19, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 6 Comments

I’ve written about needing an oar to keep swimming. I offer those oars to people when I can — as a career coach focusing on people with chronic illness. And, I gotta’ tell you that at least once a day, I talk to someone who is drowning just trying to get to work, never mindRead More

Exercise – You don't have to love it.

October 17, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 4 Comments

We know that it’s impossible to find time to exercise when you hold down a job and are way tired from chronic illness symptoms. (Never mind walking the dog and carpooling the kids.) No, you’re not superman (or woman). Clients tell me that they can’t get up even earlier or come home later to goRead More

Sen. Pete Domenici — is he disabled, just a little incapable or merely living with a diagnosis?

October 11, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 1 Comment

Chronic illness rears its ugly head again. This time, it’s a U.S. Senator. Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico announced that he won’t run for re election because he has Frontotemporal disease. It usually appears in people younger than the 75 year old senator. A client of mine, 46, has it and she continues toRead More

Recommendations to Social Security Administration

September 5, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe Leave a Comment

Last summer, I was honored (and a little intimidated by my colleagues) to participate in a process to advise the Social Security Administration on ssdi and ssi benefits. Hold your applause. They’re not giving away more money (did you know that SSA gives out 120 billion dollars in benefits) — just trying to make theRead More

Herniated stomas – a surgery option

September 4, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 5 Comments

I just visited a surgeon. Not the one who performed the original ileostomy ten years ago but his associate, a young woman whom I thought I’d feel most comfortable discussing the current situation. I have what looks to be a herniated stoma (a hernia in the stoma) and I wanted to find out what thisRead More

Former surgeon general urges presidential candidates should make prevention of chronic illness a priority

August 30, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe Leave a Comment

Okay – he’s no longer surgeon general (2002-2006) but hooray! Dr. Richard Carmon speaking at University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health “called on current and future policy makers to focus on chronic disease prevention.” The article goes on to say that (and I”m quoting it all here): “nine out of 10 AmericansRead More

And here's another take on stress and MS

August 23, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 1 Comment

A reader, Jackie from Connecticut, sent me this link to an article in WedMD, “Stress,Violence May Make MS worse”. Geez. Are you surprised that violence would be bad for someone’s health? Or that it would aggravate an already weakened body? I’m not. But the interesting item in the story was the reference to their choiceRead More

The news that stress can make your disease worse … can be harmful to your health

August 22, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 4 Comments

Yikes. Now it’s proven: stress makes neurodegenerative disease worse. That means that the person who responded, “You have to make sure you don’t get stressed” when I told her that I have multiple sclerosis (MS) – was right??? Nope – because you can’t prevent getting stressed. It’s a daily, random, minute to minute experience. That’sRead More

Cold, hot and something in between.

July 31, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 2 Comments

Yikes! I can easily forget what it’s like to be in places where you can’t control the air conditioning. I spend my days in an office — but my office is in my home. I only have to negotiate with my husband and daughters (and our daughters don’t live here very often any more). ForRead More

Some things to think about with an ileostomy.

July 26, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 2 Comments

The summer and humidity, in particular, is tough on us ileostomy folks. My flange (this thing that attaches to my skin) easily gets irritated. I went to a “wound nurse” (that’s what it’s called!) to see if there has been an improvement in the technology over the 10 years since I first got this andRead More

"Can we talk?" I live with an ileostomy

July 22, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 1 Comment

This week, I had an epiphany. I don’t talk about living with an ileostomy. What made me realize this? The CDC recognizes the "reality" of chronic fatigue syndrome

July 17, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 1 Comment

Hooray. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is releasing studies showing that chronic fatigue syndrome is a real disease and not just “yuppie flu”. They’re also sponsoring a $6m public awareness campaign about the illness. That’s a start in the right direction toward helping individuals with this disease feel less like they’re “psych cases” orRead More

How Doctors Think

Headaches can be a real pain

June 6, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 2 Comments

This spring, I’ve had miserable headaches from allergies. I’m noticing that it’s affecting my relationships. Just today, my dog, Iko, looked at me quite angrily when I cut our walk short because every footfall caused ratcheting pain. The pain gets so bad sometimes that only acupuncture (thank you my wellness medical team) gives relief. I’veRead More

In the good news department, Genzyme got the OK for testing a new drug for MS. You ask, what’s good about this? Well, when I hear that a new drug treatment might be available, I’m glad because the more the more the merrier (at least until we get a cure). Nothing stopped the progression ofRead More

Allergies, coughs and sinus headaches. Can I complain?

May 15, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 1 Comment

The other day, I found myself complaining about my sinus headache from allergies. When I stopped and noticed it, there were 2 things that struck me about this. ONE: I never had allergies until a few years ago and it’s become just one more health/illness thing to get used to. In fact, until a fewRead More

Searching for a diagnosis

January 23, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 2 Comments
