What do you REALLY want?

July 25, 2008 by Rosalind Joffe Leave a Comment

Before I get to today’s topic, here’s an offer you can’t miss: My free, groundbreaking report, Chronic Illness in the Workplace: Career Success is Possible in exchange for completing a two question survey. It couldn’t be easier. Click on the link, take the survey and recieve my report. THANK YOU!

I told you in my last post that I’d explain how Daisy came up with the idea to become a public school music teacher.

A few months ago, I took a class with a coach, Christian Mickelson (smallbizu.com) , and in it I learned some very cool information about offering free sessions (some of you may remember that I ran a special deal during the winter offering free sessions.) Especially helpful was how Christian worked with a client to help figure out what he/she REALLY WANTS. I tailored his questions and came up with this:

1. Take a breath, close your eyes.

2. Think about your work/career/job. Ask yourself, what do you REALLY, REALLY want in this arena — (with no limitations).

3. Now, thinking about this, imagine yourself THERE.

Ask yourself: What would it “look” like? How would you be, feel, behave?

List this. Note: When I do this with a client, I write the words down so I can read them back but you can do this on your own. Don’t let your inner critic or fears get in the way.

4. Now, say these words aloud to yourself.

Ask yourself: What is the best part of this? Then ask yourself: Why is this the best part? Write down your responses.

4. Now, ask yourself: What is getting in my way of having this? List this.

5. Remembering what you wrote about how it would look and feel, ask yourself: is there another way (perhaps a different kind of job or career) that would allow me to achieve that experience but is more attainable?

After you try this, let me know how it went for you. Although Daisy and others have found this useful, it might not be the right questions for everyone. I’d love to hear your feedback.
