I’m a chronic illness career coach so you can imagine that hearing about job loss is not uncommon for me. But the daily news reports of a new round of job losses is leaving me very sad. And I find I’m growing numb to the numbers and the stories. Are you?
On the other hand, maybe you’ve got other worries. According to this article, “Americans Fear Chronic Disease Above All Else“, research by the American Diabetic Association shows that Americans worry about chronic disease more than debt, divorce or unemployment. In a recent post, Your Money or Your Health, I quoted the CEO of Partners Healthcare who made just that point to a group of healthcare executives: Health is everyone’s top priority – over money.
But just as I was thinking I understood, another article appeared in my “google alert” box: Job Loss Requires A Proactive Approach to Health. This one points out that job loss can lead to chronic illness, such as heart disease, depression. Yikes.
So if I’ve got it right: You want to keep your job because losing it will make you sick. But even if you have a job, you’re spending your days worrying that you will become chronically ill.
Which means that if you are healthy and employed, you’ve got nothing to worry about except losing your job or getting sick.
It’s hard to catch a break.
