Chronic illness rears its ugly head again.
This time, it’s a U.S. Senator. Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico announced that he won’t run for re election because he has Frontotemporal disease. It usually appears in people younger than the 75 year old senator. A client of mine, 46, has it and she continues to work. It causes problems at times but she’s working around it. She doesn’t consider the idea of not working.
Senator Domenici might feel similarly. I don’t know. Or maybe he figures it’s his time to retire anyway. Somehow, I doubt that. A New York Times article reports that Dr. Jason Karlawish, associate professor of medicine and medical ethics at the University of Pennsylvania said, “This is a case study for something that will be an issue more and more as people don’t necessarily retire at 65. Just because he has a diagnosis doesn’t mean he’s not capable of doing his job.”
