Poor me

October 7, 2007 by Rosalind Joffe 2 Comments

lucy vit There’s no such thing as fair… in love, war or office politics. Certainly, not in health. When you don’t have good health, nothing good comes from thinking about fairness.

A client, in a burst of “honest disclosure” recently shared with her boss that it’s not fair that she got MS at this point in her career, when she finally got her dream job. Oops, that’s a slippery slop and I suggest: stay off it. Watching an “I Love Lucy” rerun recently, ( I wasn’t feeling well and hungry for distraction), I remembered how she could really put on the big tears. Someone, Ricky, Ethel or the world, seemed to always “do her wrong.” Life was always against her. But Lucy could get away with it. They loved her.
At work, keep the sob story to yourself … or your dog. Your dog knows it and will agree with you, Life isn’t fair.

This reminds me of an excellent quote which I wrote down to send my friend (a teacher) who has also sought fun ways over the years to say “life isn’t fair” –

“It’s a little late in the history of the entire world to introduce an element of fairness, and beyond even my considerable powers to bring it to bear, anyway.”
