Here’s something that may prove to be a positive tool for older and/or chronically ill workers to expand their job horizons. Marci Alboher recently appeared on the Today Show talking about internships for adults.

As a writer trying to get into certain markets — like TV, Radio and specifically NPR (which has laid off so much staff recently) — I was thinking of exploring an internship at my local affiliate. I could only work a few hours a week, and I’m no good in the mornings because of my health, but when I did a radio internship in college, it was in the evening.

Just a thought — for those feeling out of the loop. Personally, I find myself sought out a lot as an expert lately BECAUSE I have a long and varied career. Young people may be a little more tech savvie, but I really know how the world works in a way they don’t. Of course, none of it is paying work at the moment, but I’m learning and people are learning from me as well. I’m surprised at the respect I get for being older and experienced.

Great Idea to lead people to Marci’s post. I didn’t realize she’d written about it but I’m going to mention the link between these ideas on Twitter (@WorkWithIllness) — and I might even write about it myself. Let me know if you do an internship, Christina – I’d love to have you write about it here!
