The fact is that most people nod knowingly when you tell them your computer isn’t working –Â and they’re quick to share their computer horror stories. But when your body crashes from a chronic illness flare? You get that blank stare –HUH?
My client, “Janet”, just spent 10 days in the nether world of “downed” computer and here’s what she learned.
There are similarities between the tech world and the world of medicine and there’s one very big difference.
First, similarities: As a consumer, you’re dealing with people who speak a “different” language, often can’t deliver what they promise even with the best of intentions and the struggle is to rebuild something that resists all attempts to get back to normal.
The difference: Other people get it when your computer crashes — they even giveyou empathic pats on the back. Now, Janet’s business is web-based and her clients didn’t get their stuff on time. But, they just blamed the computer gods and knew Janet was worth the wait.
Funny thing is that Janet found the computer crash more frustrating than any fibromyalgia flare.  But she was much surprised by this silver lining. Sure is sweeter to go through a bad time when people can relate!
