Amy T, at Diabetes Mine, diabetes (and other diseases) info gold mine made me aware ofOprah’s newest interest: the thyroid.
Oprah… trend setter or trend spotter?
In October issue of “O” , Oprah disclosed her “thyroid condition”. When Oprah learned of this diagnosis (oh, so that’s why I’ve been tired and gained so much weight!), she decided to take care of herself.
So, she took a month off from work to heal on her Hawiian estate, apparently only eating fresh vegetables. (and didn’t take a drug therapy …. see what Tara Parker Pope, online NY Times health blogger thinks about that message.)
FYI – Oprah’s made it a mission to talk about women’s health issues but hasn’t included thyroid or any autoimmune diseases. Last winter, author/on-line blogger, Mary Shimon, called undiagnosed hyperthyroid “an epidemic” and challenged Oprah to start the conversation!
I have a hunch that when sh left for Hawaii, Oprah wasn’t worrying about:
What do I say when I call in sick?
And just who is going to get my work done while I’m away from the office?
Yeah, my supervisor said to take the time I need, but I know what he’s really thinking…. how quickly can I get rid of her when she returns?
Needless to say, Oprah’s got the health insurance to pay for what she needs. But, if she gets really sick, will she have her job?
Maybe she hasn’t thought this through completely. I should probably send her an email and tell her that I could help her figure out how to keep her job if things get tough. 🙂

You should email Oprah and tell her what’s what and offer your services. Really.

My momma said if I can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.
But my momma has also struggled with a thyroid condition for years (even had a scare that there was a tumor or cancer), so I’m a little sensitive.
But I think I’ll still keep my mouth shut. 🙂

My momma said that, too, Erin. But I was never sure what “nice” meant…
